With Bear Grylls’ new show officially announced, it looks like Les Stroud is prepping to strike back. Since early December, messages coming from Les’ facebook and twitter accounts have been vague but have peaked our suspicions that an official announcement for a new season of Survivorman is getting close.
“the networks have me hangin on a thread – i have pitched them survivorman ten days – survivorman and son and survivorman bigfoot – just need to get a canadian network on board and we’re back on baby!….”
This was the first post that piqued our interest back in early December. Does this mean
we will be watching three different Survivorman series? Will only one of these series be selected? Or will the next season simply be a mix of all three. At Trailslive we’re excited to see all three but we would be really disappointed if plain ol’ Survivorman didn’t return on some level.
Days later, a message showed up on Les’ facebook that was deleted some weeks later. The message, in essence, was declaring Les’ extreme frustration with the networks over the red tape involved in setting up a new season. He stated that launching the next season as a webcast might be a better option. He posed it as a question to his followers.
“Looks like the overwhelming response to my question is DO IT!!… I am happy to KEEP GOING….well going web only means i can do MORE – without long delays trying to work through contracts and the like….ok – I am looking into it all….stand by on this one…..My childhood hero was Jacques Cousteau – he didnt stop so why should I?”
At this point Les was excited, so we were excited. We were ready for this thing to happen, thinking that this could mean more episodes, wilder scenarios, and who knows what. But maybe this was only a threat to get what he wanted from the networks. In that case, way to be a tough negotiator Les. It looked like his tactic worked when he posted again only days after.
“good news – I may have found a broadcaster home (in Canada) for the new survivorman shows (the US is already in) – there is no deal worked out yet – but we all want things to be sewn up by January so I can get out there and start filming….cross your fingers and visualize for me – i basically need enough network partners to make at least 8 new survivorman episodes!!!”
Our only thoughts at this point were, “…at least 8 new episodes”?! at least!?! How exciting was this news when the last season only consisted of only four new episodes with only two expeditions and one “best-of” show. That was unsatisfying to say the least… After this Les went into stealth-mode about the show for a while and the comment about going to webcast format was deleted (must have been a demand of the networks).
Then, nearly a month later, on January 13th came the most encouraging post yet followed by a very telling response from Les.
“I hate this part – the part where i have fifteen hundred phone calls and meetings with networks just to get to go out and do more Survivorman!!! I’m pumped and ready….just gotta finish the deal and fire up the cameras…”
After all this, we feel it’s safe to bank on new episodes by summer, just in time to compete with Bear. Les has been quiet about the show ever since January 15th but that just leads us to believe he is prepping to begin shooting and all that’s left is an official announcement which may not happen until filming is well under way. Rest assured Survivorman fans, Les is back!
Good luck out there Les! Looking forward to “at least” 8 new episodes!
